View coursesWhat is a Traineeship?
A traineeship is an education and training programme which incorporates work experience, preparing young people for their future careers by helping them to become ‘work ready’.
Designed for people aged 16 to 18 who don’t yet have the appropriate skills or experience, traineeships provide the essential work preparation training, English, maths and work experience needed to secure an apprenticeship or employment.

Is a Traineeship the right path for you?
There are many benefits to going down the route of an apprenticeships, this is a quick overview of some of those benefits:
- Motivated to work
- Unemployed, or work fewer than 16 hours per week and have little work experience
- Aged between 16 – 18

A young person can choose a Traineeship at 16 as they are recognised as a valid education option (now young people have to be in some form of education or training until they are 18). This also means that parents can continue to receive Child Benefit and tax credits whilst their child is taking part in a Traineeship.

Are Traineeships paid?
Employers are not required to pay trainees during their placement as it is technically classed as education.
However you may qualify for financial support, including the 16 to 19 Bursary Fund. Some employers may also support you with travel and/or meal costs.
