Skills North East’s qualified learner adventures. This is Anthony’s story.

Last year Anthony was working in a role that didn’t satisfy him, after gaining qualifications with Skills North East he will start his new business in fitness in the New Year.

Last year Anthony was working in sales and customer service, he knew for some time this wasn’t the career for him.

He had itchy feet, an active creative mind and it was time for a change.

He wanted to take charge of his situation, make changes and reach his potential.

But how and in which direction?

Whilst deciding, Anthony went on to do the Great North Run, this focus of energy ignited his passion for fitness once again.

Spurred on, he joined his local gym and started to feel better both physically and mentally, he then realised he was able to see a future and it was one of supporting others as a fitness coach. To follow his dream, he needed the right qualifications.

Anthony isn’t one to make rash decisions and spent time deciding on the right learning provider, he chose Skills North East (SNE), the course was one day a week for 15 weeks and he went onto become qualified as a Level 3 Gym Instructor and Personal Trainer.

One reason Anthony chose SNE was of the credentials of our head tutor Douglas Hunter, who has a vast background as programme lead at College’s, Academies and Gyms within the North East.

Another reason was also attracted how the course was funded, this is through an Advanced Learner Loan, meaning the learner can concentrate in the course without the worry of immediate debt. The learner has time to become established in their industry and when they earn over £26,575, 5% is automatically deducted from their wage to make the repayments.

Anthony spoke highly of his tutor and the course content, ‘The sessions were mostly delivered by Zoom, nothing was lost in delivery and when the rules were relaxed the assessment sessions were held in their Newcastle gym. This course has given me the knowledge, confidence and a framework to progress this into a career.’

Douglas, head tutor of fitness said ‘I found Anthony enthusiastic about the course and he has some ideas where to take his new career ahead. One of which is focusing on supporting clients with fitness for mental health. The course not only teaches learners the qualification but also how to access work whether it be employment or going self-employed. I wish him all the best with his new venture.’

Anthony comments on his plans for the future, ‘My plans have been underway for some time now, I’m a fully qualified Level 3 Personal Trainer and I’m looking to start my new venture Bodify in the New Year. I’m looking forward to creating the Bodify community and coaching clients.’
